The Use of Supernatural Elements in Shakespeares Hamlet...
Discuss the usage and effects that the supernatural elements have in both Kyds `The Spanish Tragedy and Shakespeares Hamlet. Ghosts or supernatural beings feature both in The Spanish Tragedy, written by Thomas Kyd, in 1587, and in Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, in 1601. Ghosts and the supernatural `remind the characters and the audience of the constraints the past places on the present, and also the obligations the living bear to the departed . There were many superstitions surrounding these entities during Elizabethan times. A ghost defined by the Oxford English Dictionary is `the soul of a deceased person, spoken of as appearing in a visible form, or otherwise manifesting its presence, to the living. The supernaturalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦All we know of the ghost in the Ur Hamlet, as the original text has not survived, is that it was a `ghost who cries like an oyster wife in the cellarage, which is extremely unlike the ghost we see in Hamlet, but that could hav e been an initial starting point for Shakespeare to work from. In the play Hamlet, the ghost initially appears to a group of sentries stationed outside the palace on a cold and eerie night. Ghosts and the supernatural were extremely popular in the drama of the period, and symbolised many things. In other texts of the time the usage of ghosts became extreme, as they started to talk to the characters and quickly lost their potency as a dramatic device. To an Elizabethan audience the appearance of the ghost at this particular time could have any of four meanings. It could be the actual ghost of a person returning to perform a task, an evil omen of a forthcoming event, an incarnation of the devil, or finally a symbol of the craziness and madness about at the time. Which refers specifically to the quote `all is rotten in the state of Denmark. Shakespeare knew these four interpretations and played on them with the inclusion of the ghost, as it created confusion and mayhem. Westward Expansion Of The United States - 1054 Words
Westward Expansion in the United States created controversy about the admission of new states into the union. The first provision of the Westward Expansion was the Compromise of 1850. This compromise was designed to settle disputes among the North and South states about slavery expansion. Senator Henry Clay proposed that California be admitted as a free slave in a trade-off for tougher fugitive slave laws for runaways. As a part of the compromise of 1950, Congress also passed the Fugitive Law which required U.S Marshals, deputies, and ordinary citizens to help return slaves to their owners. Although fugitive laws were very strict, slaves still escaped the oppressive institution of slavery. After being reluctant to freeing any slaves, Lincoln finally issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, three years after the south seceded from the union. Lincoln, didn t have the power to free slaves in the South because the South was a new nation. Although it was law that slaves be free, who was going to tell them they were free? Certainly not the men that made profit off their labor. Even as free men and women, where would they do? Many were illiterate and only knew farm labor. Black men were denied the opportunity to fight for the union in the early phases of the war. Ultimately, the union changed their mind and allowed black men. The decision was not a light-hearted one. Even though blacks and white northerners were fighting to end slavery, white men wanted nothing to do with black men. Often times black men faced discrimination and violence. Asian Emigration Patterns, Similarities, and Perspectives essays
Asian Emigration Patterns, Similarities, and Perspectives essays Meantime, the first pattern of arrivals of Asians to America - in any significant numbers - were the Chinese, in who were pushed out of their homeland but also drawn to the opportunities for employment in Hawaii, the American West, and British Columbia. There were also Korean, Filipino and Japanese immigrants who followed a second pattern, which was bolstered by a vigorous recruitment effort on the part of sugar plantation owners in Hawaii. The cultivation of sugar was a growth industry in Hawaii, and workers were needed, and were welcomed from those three Asian nations. The third pattern of Asian immigrants mentioned by the author was groups of "Asian Indians" (people from the northwestern region of India) who purchased passage to Canada and the Pacific Coast of America. These three patterns of immigration into the U.S. and Canada, by Asians from five different nations were only a small part of a much larger "global phenomenon" occurring in this time period - and the author describes it thoroughly on page 4. "The capitalist form of production, under which goods are produced for sale in order to make the largest profit possible and workers receive wages for selling their labor," appeared first in England, then elsewhere in Western Europe, and then in the United States. Workers were moved across "national boundaries to enable entrepreneurs to exploit natural resources in more and more parts of the world," Chan continues. The colonial governments such as England, in many cases, were not hesitant to bring in workers from the far corners of the globe when the indigenous populations in those conquered colonies could not provide a sufficient workforce for the exploitation of the natural resources in those colonies. That was a large part of the global phenomenon of workers moving from place to place - beyond the basic emigration which was already taking place...

How to Teach the Present Continuous to ESL Students
How to Teach the Present Continuous to ESL Students Teaching the present continuous usually takes place after the present, past, and future simple forms have been introduced. However, many books and curricula choose to introduce the present continuous immediately after theà present simple. This order can be confusing as students may have difficulties understanding the subtlety of something that happens as a routine and anà action that takes places at the moment of speaking. No matter when you introduce this tense,à its important to provide as much context as possible by using appropriate time expressions, such as now, at the moment, currently, etc.à How to Introduce the Present Continuous Start by Modeling the Present Continuous Begin teaching the present continuous by speaking about what is happening in the classroom at the moment of introduction. Once students recognizeà this usage, extend to other things you know are happening now. This can include simple facts such as The sun is shining at the moment. Were learning English at the moment. etc. Make sure to mix it up by using a number of different subjects. Im teaching the present continuous right now.My wife is working in her office at the moment. Those boys are playing tennis over there.etc. Choose a magazine or web page with lots of activity, go through a number of pages, and ask students questions based on the photo. What are they doing now? What is she holding in her hand?Which sport are they playing?etc. To teach the negative form, use the magazine or web pages to ask yes or no questions focusing on eliciting a negative response. You may want to model a few examples before asking students. Is she playing tennis? - No, she isnt playing tennis. Shes playing golf.Is he wearing shoes? - No, hes wearing boots.(Asking students) Are they eating lunch? Is she driving a car?etc. Once students have practiced a few rounds of questions, distribute magazines or other pictures around the classroom and ask students to grill each other on what is happening at the moment. How to Practice the Present Continuous Explaining the Present Continuous on the Board Use a present continuous timeline to illustrate the fact that the present continuous is used to express what is happening at the moment. If you feel comfortable withà the level of the class, introduce the idea that the present continuous can be used to speak about what is happening around the present moment in time. Its a good idea at this point to contrast the present continuous auxiliary verb to be with other auxiliary verbs, pointing out that ing must be added to the verb in the present continuous form. Comprehension Activities Comprehension activities such as using photos in magazines will help with the present continuous. Present continuous dialogues can also help illustrate the form. Present continuous worksheets will help tie in the form with appropriate time expressions. Review quizzes contrasting present simple with the present continuous will also help. Continued Activity Practice Its a good idea to compare and contrast the present continuous with the present simple form once students have understood the difference. Using the present continuous for other purposes such as discussing present projects at work or speaking about future scheduled meetings will help students become familiar with other uses of the present continuous form. Challenges with the Present Continuous The greatest challenge with present continuous is understanding the difference between a routine action (present simple) and an activity occurring at the moment. Its quite common for students to use the present continuous to speak about daily habits once theyve learned the form, so comparing the two forms early on will help students understand the differences. The use of the present continuous to expressà future scheduled eventsà is best left for intermediate level classes.à Finally, students might also have difficulties understanding that stative verbs may not be used with continuous forms. Present Continuous Lesson Plan Example Greet the class and talk about what is happening at the moment in class. Make sure to pepper your sentences with appropriate time expressions such as at the moment and now.Ask students what they are doing at the moment to help them begin using the form. At this point in the lesson, keep things simple by not diving into the grammar. Try to get students to provide correct answers in a relaxed conversational manner.Use a magazine or find pictures online and discuss what is happening in the picture.à As you discuss what he/she or they are doing in photos, begin to differentiate by asking questions with you and we.à At the end of this discussion, write up a few example sentences on the whiteboard. Make sure to use different subjects and ask students to identify the differences between each sentence or question.à Point out the helping verb be changes, but note that the main verb (playing, eating, watching, etc.) remains the same.Begin contrasting the present continuous with the prese nt simple by alternating questions. For example:à What is your friend doing at the moment?à andà Where does your friend live?à Get student input on the differences between the two forms. Help students understand as necessary. Make sure to point out differences in time expression use between the two forms.à Ask students to write out ten questions, five with the present continuous and five with the present simple. Move around the room helping students with any difficulties.à Have students interview each other using the ten questions.à For homework, ask students to write a short paragraph contrasting what a friend or family member does every day and what they are doing at the moment. Model a few sentences on the board so that students clearly understand the homework assignment.

American Policy, Judicial Activism and Restraint Assignment
American Policy, Judicial Activism and Restraint - Assignment Example In giving its ruling, the conservative group of the Roberts Court improved the cause of "corporate personhood" through giving large corporations the capacity to drown out the voices of the electorate by the production and circulating of quasi-media messages promoting or demeaning certain political candidates. In giving corporations this power, the Court opened the door to making them the most powerful purveyors of public opinion, devoid of requiring accountability or truthfulness (Manje 102). This is a power that should not be granted to corporations, thus I close this question is support of judicial restraint powers. In Furman v. Georgia, the justices considered the death penalty as a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment because these death sentences were cruel and unusual in the same manner that being struck by lightning is unusual and very cruel (Griffins 304). They argued the fact that people charged with rape are simply convicted, but those charged with petty crime want to be executed. I feel that the death penalty is a deterrent to crime so long as it is imposed on the necessary crimes that deserve to be punished with the death penalty. For instance, rapists, people who are charged with more than three counts of any crime. This will work as a very good example of deterring crime rates (Griffins 305). What would make one form of capital punishment cruel and unusual is the virtual belief that genuinely innocent individuals will be executed and that there is no likely way of repaying them for this miscarriage of justice? What constitutes cruel and unusual punishment, for instance, is the agony the innocent friends and family of criminals have to also undergo during the execution. However, the judges took into consideration the message they were sending to likely culprits in order to deter crime. (Griffinsà 304) Haidtââ¬â¢s research gives me greater insight into why people feel differently than I do about politics and government due to the simple fact that their always opposing views about politics that is why there are liberalism and conservatism.

Discussion - Assignment Example Our leader initially indicated that he was not in support of the use of Chinese parts. The advocates of Chinese parts also had their own motives and ambitions in the mix. The use of Chinese parts would have meant a higher profit margin which would have resulted in their promotions and higher salaries. However, the profits would have proven to be temporary as the consumer satisfaction would have gone down with the passage of time hence resulting in lower sales. Our leader would also have benefited in the form of a promotion if he would have returned good profits to the shareholders. Many group members knew that very well and they attempted to capitalize on the situation by using flattery. However, the other group kept on bringing up the question that Japanese parts would cost us much more so we could have purchased more C hinese spare parts and stored them for later use. They showed a bright picture of praise and accolades to our leader. They emphasized that the change was necessary, and a timely action was of paramount importance. The discussion almost heated up between the opposing points of view. Our leader decided to take a break, and make a decision at a later time. Hyatt Walkway Essay Example for Free
Hyatt Walkway Essay In Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, in 1981, connections supported the ceiling rods holding up the second and the fourth floor walkways has failed and collapsed and fell down on the first floor where was so crowded then and resulted in 114 deaths and over 200 injuries. Beside of the loss of lives, this collapse left millions dollars in cost behind and a number of principals lost their engineering licenses and number of firms went bankruptcy. As for the events triggered this collapse affecting the thousands of people adversely, the most critical and important factor was the change of the design of the hanger rod connections from one-rod to two-rod system to make the assembly task simpler doubling the load on the connector. Improper design utilizing abrupt section changes, resulting in stress concentrations Degradation of materials in a connection. Improper design due to lack of consideration of all forces acting on a connection, especially those associated with volume changes. Lack of consideration of large residual stresses resulting from manufacture or fabrication. These are the most important structural factors caused of the walkway collapse. And it is resulted from the conflictual and controversial communication between the Havens Steel Company and G.C.E International Inc. This can be deemed as the most important factor triggered the walkway collapse because of the fact that these two professional engineering companies obviously were not able to communicate each other in professional bounders and havenââ¬â¢t acted in a responsible way and understood the importance of the job they were doing. G.C.E International Inc., Daniel M. Duncan and Jack D. Gillum is the most blame for walkway collapse because of charging gross negligence, incompetence, misconduct and unprofessional conduct in the practice of engineering in connection with their performance of engineering services in the design and construction of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. G.C.E International Inc. bears the most responsibility because of the fact that they were the responsible one on design changing and they were failed on final check step by approving the design change opinion by the Havens Company and they have failed on it. G.C.E International Inc. and Havens Company were involved in key decisions because of the fact that Havens Company proposed the design change on as mentioned above and G.C.E International Inc. accepted this offer after receiving the shop drawings.

Expectations and Education :: Learning Education Essays
Expectations and Education One of the most sought-after goals in the world of marketing is a high degree of consumer satisfaction. But in the world of education, satisfaction by itself should not be the criterion for success. If both satisfaction and performance are high, we have cause for celebration. If satisfaction is high and performance is low, as is currently the case in the United States, we have cause for serious alarm. According to Stevenson and Stigler in "The Learning Gap", American parents whose children generally score below Asian children on tests of academic achievement, gave the most positive evaluations when asked about their children's schools and how their children were performing. If the children are doing well, such high levels of satisfaction would be justified. But maintaining high levels of satisfaction with poor performance creates a huge obstacle to the improvement of education. Before you can solve a problem, you have to admit that you have a problem. Why should children study hard i f their parents already express high levels of satisfaction? Why should schools pursue reform with enthusiasm and resolve when they already meet generally high levels of public approval? Americans want a good life for their children. They want their children to be happy and well adjusted. But Americans have not realized that access to the good life and happiness in the future will be blocked if we fail to prepare our children for the competition they will face in an ever more competitive world. As Americans, we have historically had a high opinion of ourselves. In only a few centuries we have opened up a continent, established an effective political and economic system, and brought the nation to prosperity. Americans have been thought of as courageous, industrious, and creative. Early in the American history, people believed they could achieve almost anything with enough effort. Nevertheless, many Americans assume that positive self-esteem is a necessary precursor of competence and place a higher priority on life adjustment and the enhancement of self-esteem than on academic learning. They forget that one of the most important sources of children's self-esteem is realizing that they have mastered a challenging task. We have gradually come to emphasize the limits of what can be accomplished imposed by innate differences among individuals. There are individual differences among human beings in whatever characteristics are measured. But this variability should not be interpret ed to mean that the general level of accomplishment cannot be raised.

Problems Of The Ie Policy Formulation Education Essay
The hypothesis of this survey is stressing the jobs of the IE policy preparation and execution. It can be seen as a major root cause of hapless educational accomplishment among the PWDs is reasonably supported harmonizing to the research findings. However, the research worker discovered that there are more critical issues than the IE policy that affect the educational success of the handicapped kids in Myanmar. This chapter summarizes the research findings from the field work by measuring the hypothesis and aims of the research which determine whether the IE policy has been good implemented. It besides includes a decision of of several issues that hinder the educational chances for the PWDs and their degree of engagement in the policy preparation. In order to sit the interviewee with some respondents from DPOs, the challenges of accessing IE services the deficiency of sufficient instructors, the deficiency of committedness, and the deficiency of hope by agencies of instruction, poorness. Besides, human rights misdemeanors, the deficiency of public services, hapless execution of instruction policy, and the deficiency of relevant course of studies, and the deficiency of school liberty are major factors that influence the instruction development of CWDs. The first portion of this chapter summarizes the cardinal findings of the fieldwork on how the IE policy meets the challenges of better educational chances for the PWDs in Myanmar and what factors undermine the instruction development chance for the PWDs in primary and lower secondary degrees. The 2nd portion of the chapter covers a decision and recommendations related to the IE policy.DecisionBased on the research findings, it can be concluded that a demand for better educationa l substructure in Myanmar should be addressed every bit desperately as possible in order to make development chance for the PWDs. The construct of IE means welcoming all CWDs without favoritism in formal schools. Indeed, the focal point are on capacities, developmental demands, and potencies of all kids including the CWDs. IE ââ¬Ës efforts to suit the CWDs into the normal scenes can besides be a really ascendant factor over the public presentation ability and the rational accomplishments of the pupils with disablements. This research proved that the auxiliary supports for their disablements are needed for advancing the CWDs ââ¬Ë overall development in an optimum scene. These supports include a consideration of overall organisation, course of study and schoolroom pattern, support for larning and staff development. The survey calls for regard of difference and diverseness of single features and demands. Sing school related environmental issue, socio-cultural and poverty issue and other policy related factors, self-respect, equality and disablement rights are really of import because they provide a opportunity for the PWDs to relocate their involvement in larning. Sum uping the findings of this survey, current IE policy execution procedures might non be the most serious issue that direly undermines the learning ability of CWDs, but it does impact the attitudinal alterations and the guaranting educational chances for CWDs to acquire the societal interaction in the society. However, it would be well hard to make a genuinely inclusive educational environment for some handicapped kids depending on their disablements. This does non intend that the CWDs should be segregated in particular schools and isolated from all life in that environment. Even though Myanmar authorities signed Education for All, the practical execution is far from desired. Therefore, the research worker strongly argues that there should be an appropriate environment for PWDs that it would non be good to anyone if including it in the same puting every bit as other non-disabled people in both instruction and societal sectors. In fact, this is besides the rights of PWDs clearly determined by the international norms such as Declaration of Human Rights in which Myanmar already ratified and Bali Declaration on Inclusive Development for People with Disabilities and United Nation Convention on Right for People with Disabilities which were signed in 2011. In add-on, this survey has highlighted the challenges of the PWDs to make the end of EFA through IE policy in Myanmar. The existent challenge of the inclusive instruction is to run into the particular demands of all CWDs but now the authorities ââ¬Ës execution program has been hindered by both the nature of the policy itself and the insufficient support support. To work out these challenges, the authorities needs to get the better of all types of barriers mainly instruction policy reforming procedure, the altering procedure of social-cultural beliefs, poorness issues, and school related patterns and manners of acquisition of the CWDs. Furthermore, budget restriction is another of import factor impacting the execution of the IE policy. This survey found that the authorities ââ¬Ës budget allotment for instruction for the PWDs is less than wellness and rehabilitation services. Therefore, educational substructure is extremely required to be provided for the CWDs in order to accomplish their societal and educational development. In add-on, schools and sufficient instructors in all countries should be provided by the authorities and acquisition should be free for all non merely in theory but a stronger execution must be in topographic point to assure an equal acquisition chance. Limited apprehensions of the construct of disablement, negative attitudes toward the CWDs and a hard-boiled opposition to alter are the major barriers hindering inclusive instruction. Of peculiar concern is the fact that the attitudes of parents and instructors are seen as the decisive factors for successful inclusion. Since the research findings showed that IE instruction without proper version to the local context is still weak for the CWDs in prosecuting quality instruction, schools should hold specially trained instructors in disablement intervention, enabling them to give supports in learning in order to advance the pupil ââ¬Ës competence and larning ability in instruction. With regard to this, bing theories of inclusive instruction have been proven to be successful in other states. However, Myanmar IE policy alteration is non the lone issue to be addressed in advancing the educational criterion of the PWDs, but the perceptual experience of the parents in the public toward their kids sustainable development should besides be taken into consideration. In fact, based on the findings, the research worker strongly argues that there is besides a demand for legal protection of human rights misdemeanors against the CWDs since the research clearly identified that the equality and the just undermine acquisition chances for the CWDs which subsequently greatly affect on their single development. In add-on, the research worker strongly believes that there should be a better execution in instruction and larning procedure in which the CWDs are extremely motivated to larn through particular instruction. The current instruction and larning procedure does non turn to the single acquisition demands and the course of study lack the needed flexibleness to provide to the demands of the CWDs. There is small range for kids ââ¬Ës engagement in originative activities or critical thought and instructors lack preparation and experience in instruction and managing the CWDs. Furthermore, the high cost of disablement related stuffs was another discouraging factor of the CWDs to entree inclusive instruction services. With the strong committedness to the long term basic instruction development program and EFA-NAP, MOE tries at its best to raise the quality of basic instruction for all school-aged kids in both formal and non-formal instruction. The state ââ¬Ës educational resources for the PWDs should be strengthened and brought in line with the CRPD. In add-on, a house foundation for future growing of IE for all CWDs across the state should be put in topographic point now. In-depth research on IE for CWDs is a cardinal constituent to develop internal expertness and supply quality recommendations to the authorities and will press the authorities to go through the revised Universal Primary Education which provides the legal foundation for IE for CWDs. To sum up, the of import consequences of these findings are that inclusive instruction plan recognizes the demand for seting the larning plan to alter conditions in the society. The instruction system caters for all kids non merely in formal schools who because of the necessity of schooling in-migration for the particular schools and community acquisition centres. Thereby wholly neglected those in the rural countries where a great step of resources for development resides. Most underdeveloped states are in make bolding demand to develop national consciousness among the citizens. This has been one of the major obstructions to national development and integrating. Therefore, the research worker strongly argues that the major impact on educational accomplishment of the CWDs is the happier larning environment for them but it would besides make with a sense of regard, and self-respect among the community.RecommendationFrom the policy analyzing, single interviews, and concentrate group tre atment, the following are recommendations that are proposed by the research worker in order to inform all stakeholders who work in the inclusive instruction, irrespective of formal and particular instruction. At the same clip, this research is hoped that the information on disablement related issues will be of involvement and utile to me/LNGOs, DPOs, and other establishments to develop the disablement and instruction plans and community development plans.Datas on disablementAccurate informations is of import demands for advancing the handiness of the wider understanding about the current state of affairs and for making an analysis on the impacts of the current instruction policy toward the development of the PWDs. The current informations on disablement merely is based upon the First Myanmar National Disability Survey, so the research worker would extremely urge that farther study or research be done in order to propose a possible reform in instruction in the hereafter.School relate d factorsThe major recommendation is an constitution of a particular instruction plan in all authorities schools that would offer particular instruction categories in each mainstream school. All categories incorporating CWDs should hold a sensible ratio of instructors and pupils, and the instructors should be particularly trained to hold a disablement consciousness, particularly those instructors who taught kids with ocular damages, hearing damages and rational disablements. There needs to be a useable infinite for the varied demands of direction in the schools. The age of entry into and go forthing from the particular categories should be flexible. Besides, the schools should be equipped with appropriate instruction stuffs.Originating extra-curricular activities in and out of schoolParticular attempts should be made to affect the CWDs in particular athleticss and games. These activities help them bask school more and review their head, and construct their organic structures. In add -on, these extra-curricular activities for all CWDs are really indispensable. From the survey of best patterns, it is clear that the induction of inclusive patterns has been a consequence of concerted community consciousness. This is an of import parametric quantity non merely for advancing inclusion outside the schoolroom among kids, but besides for blossoming diverse potencies and endowments of both kids with and without disablements.Socio -cultural factorsThe engagement of parents, instructors and health professionals is really indispensable. Earlier surveies showed that for desirable partnership to predominate among instructors, parents and health professionals, a common sharing of cognition, accomplishments, experiences and decision-making is required ( Semakula, 1999 ) . Long-run and short-run developments of the educational plans are based non merely on the CWDs involvements and abilities, but besides their households ââ¬Ë supports and precedences. Obviously, the positive parental attitude toward schooling will supply a sound foundation for bettering the kids ââ¬Ës acquisition. Therefore, uninterrupted awareness-raising activities should non merely be for parents or health professionals, but besides for other community members.Policy factorsThe authorities should set in topographic point statute law that makes all CWDs as the donee of mandatory instruction so that there should besides be statute law to guarantee uninterrupted proviso of disablement friendly learning stuffs and the physical school substructures. Furthermore, the authorities should develop more adept instructors of particular demands instruction, and give them some particular motive about community mobilisation. The ultimate educational end for CWDs should be focused on either mainstreaming or particular schools and community based resource centres for a go oning long term shooting. Last, the authorities should supply more fiscal support and political protection to guarantee that th e particular tools and equipment necessary for the acquisition of CWDs become cheaper and more accessible. At the execution degree, it can be seen that the kid centre attack can make full the spread to the failure of the formal instruction system in linkage between instructors and the CWDs. The attack can be applied in many extents such as course of study reforms, active instruction manners, and significantly a infinite to use what they want to larn from their existent life patterns. At the national degree, along with the arguments, treatment, and the authorities ââ¬Ës strong will to take reform, reforming the whole dismantled instruction system will take the certain figure of old ages, using the lessons learned from current inclusive instruction plans. Apart from this, it should be really of import to make a policy and infinite where the cooperation among IE pilot undertakings, I/LNGOs, DPOs and the authorities.

U.s. Democracy And Canadian Democracy - 1719 Words
In the contemporary world, democracy is one of the most progressive system of government that states freedom as a core value. Democracy is based on the free expression of peopleââ¬â¢s opinions, points of view as well as their opposition to the government actions. Citizens have a great control over the political events taking place in their country because through the elections they can select the right candidate who will be able to represent their interests. Core values of the democracy such as freedom, equality, pursuit of happiness are similar in different countries. However, the implementation of democracies may vary. USA and Canada are two big and prosperous countries that can be a prime example of how democracies may vary despite all the similarities. There are three major differences between US democracy and Canadian democracy such as consensus or in other words substantive goals of political actions, checks and balances or how do different branches of government work, and t he last but not least federalism in regards to the division of power between federal government and territorial entities. The first and the most important difference between US and Canadian democracy is consensus. The initial word consensus means general agreement. In terms of politics, consensus means an agreement on the substantive goals of the country or in other words political program that includes an implementation plan of the alternative solutions to the countryââ¬â¢s problems or threats. Politics By William Butler Yeats Analysis - 1228 Words
Women have been in a constant war with themselves and society since the dawn of Adam and Eve. Adam, being the man, is seen as unmistakable and only slightly less perfect than an angel. Eve, on the other hand, is the beginning of all sin and death in the world. To no one s surprise, women still face titles as degrading as Eveââ¬â¢s in this day and age. ââ¬Å"Politicsâ⬠by William Butler Yeats is a poem about this constant raging war women face. Yeats cleverly tells a story about a man and a girl to send a message to all women that they are more than what society makes them out to be using politics. The oppression women face is rarely talked about, and if it is, it is largely ignored. Yeats was able to convey his message without being ignored byâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However, this is not to say that Yeats has created a narrator that wishes to control women. The girl is related to ââ¬Å"Roman...Russian...Spanish politicsâ⬠(Yeats). This comparison is anything but random. These three nations during the time period of the poem were fascist and controlling countries that were willing to do whatever it takes to obtain what it is they desire. This relationship between the obtainer and the obtained is the same in society. Society has taught men that they must be the obtainers and do whatever it takes to obtain control of women, even if that means complete degradation. The girl in the poem represents freedom in a manââ¬â¢s war; she is presented as the prize. Women are given value and a title of importance only when associated with men. Women are able to provide freedom, yet they are unable to free themselves from their own oppression because of the intensity of it. Talking about politics is easy, talking about an issue that crushes souls and prevents an entire sex from pursuing their dreams is hard. ââ¬Å"Politicsâ⬠by Yeats had the power to make this issue a household talk. The Causation Of The Modern Slave Trade - 1646 Words
There are endless reasons that human trafficking exists in modern times. These reasons are not black and white, and have a multitude of contributing factors, cause and effect, and influences. The causation of the modern slave trade is outlined in chapters three, four, and five of the text: Human Trafficking: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, written by Mary C. Burke. Chapter three, titled, ââ¬Å"Sociological Perspective: Underlying Causesâ⬠relates sociology to the concept of human trafficking to better understand the culture behind the slave trade, including political and economic characteristics. A factor contributing to the existence of human trafficking is globalization and the development of national economies. While globalization can beâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬Å"Globalization influences human trafficking as traffickers take advantage of new transparent borders, broadband communication, and economic upheaval to prey on those most vulnerable â⬠¦ people are larg ely defined by their economic worth, and since the most vulnerable have only their bodies to sell (labor â⬠¦ sex) â⬠¦ human beings become commodities and victimsâ⬠(Burke 2013). Additionally, chapter four defines population and migration as an explanation for human trafficking. As the worldââ¬â¢s population increases dramatically, there are many poor and vulnerable individuals who are forced to find a way to survive. ââ¬Å"Traffickers are resourceful, inventive, and opportunistic, and can find a way to manipulate â⬠¦ population growth â⬠¦ there is an increase in the supply of potential victims who traffickers can exploit and from whom they can profitâ⬠(Burke 2013). Victims are driven into human trafficking because they are unable to sustain themselves living in poverty, or are vulnerable as an immigrant or refugee. However, poverty is not a black and white cause of human trafficking, as poverty and economics exacerbate other reasons, such as gender inequality. The luxury car market in India is expected to reach 150,000 units by 2020, as per Mr Tomas Ernberg, Managing Director (MD), Volvo Auto India - The Modern Industry After 1945, sales once again took off, reaching 6. 7 mill ion in 1950 and 9. 3 million in 1965. The U. S. auto industry dominated the global market with 83% of all sales, but as Europe and Japan rebuilt their economies, their auto industries grew and the U. S. share dropped to about 25%. Following the OPEC oil embargo in 1973, smaller, fuel-efficient imports increased their share of the U. S. market to 26% by 1980. In the early 1980s, U. S. auto makers cut costs with massive layoffs. Throughout the 1990s, importsââ¬âparticularly from Japanââ¬âtook an increasing share of the U. S. market. Beginning in the early 1980s, Japanese and, later, German companies set up factories in the United States; by 1999, these were capable of producing about 3 million vehicles per year. That year, 8. 7 million vehicles were sold in the Untied States. Since then, domestic production by U. S. companies has continued to decline, so that they now produce somewhat more than half of all light motor vehicles sold in America (and many of their vehicles contain a significant percentage of foreign parts as determined by dollar value). In 2007, over $440 billion worth of motor vehicles and parts were produced in the United States by U. S. and foreign companies employing more than 902,000 workers. The credit crisis that began in 2008 and the associated recession resulted in significant losses for most automobile manufacturers. The U. S. industry was especially hard hit, losing sales as well from late 2007 to mid-2008 as customers sought more energy-efficient cars as gasoline prices skyrocketed, and in late 2008 U. S. automotive companies sought government financial aid. Subsequently, the government forced Chrysler and General Motors to declare bankruptcy (2009) and reorganize in an attempt to create viable companies; the U. S. and Canadian governments and the United Auto Workers owned much of the new companies. Complaints about auto pollution, traffic congestion, and auto safety led to the passage of government regulations beginning in the 1970s, forcing auto manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency and safety. Auto companies are now experimenting with cars powered by such alternative energy sources as natural gas, electricity, hydrogen fuel cells, and solar power. Staff development and employeeà welfare practices and their effect on productivity? Ghana Library Journal: Vo l. 19 (1) 2007 pp. 83-96 Staff development and employee welfare are valuable assets in an organization since an organizationââ¬â¢s primary aims are productivity and profitability. Every organization primarily needs committed and dedicatedà staff that will help the organization to meet its tactical and strategic objectives. The study examines whether staff development policies exist in three special libraries in Ghana, and whether training programmers are being offered to increase staff competence, efficiencies and performance. It was also aimed at assessing staff welfare practices and how these affectà productivity and performance. In conducting the survey, twoà sets of questionnaires were drawn up. One setà was administered to management and the other set went to Library staff. The survey revealed that all the Organizations under study have staff development policies and training programmers for staff to enhance their capabilities and efficiency. Again, the survey revealed thatà staff welfare is catered for since several motivational avenues andà incentive packages are available toà boost their morale. In his book on ââ¬Å"The spirit of Industrial Relationâ⬠Prof. H. S Krikardly observes that ââ¬Å"the whole field of welfare is one is which much can be done to comate the sense of frustration of the industrial worker, to relieve them of their personal and family worriesââ¬â¢ to improve their health, to afford them a means of self expressions, to offer them some sphere in which one can excel all others to help him to a wider conception of life, if within the field of welfare and particularly that part of it which comprises sports and games, a large measures of self government can be left to worker, even in management of facilities provided by the employer, a sense of responsibility, initiative and co-operation can be fostered and often among those whose daily tasks afford them the least opportunity of developing characteristics. So essential to industrial enterprises and wise citizenship. As a result of the above measures, the improvement in production could be achieved. The study conducted by Sahni S. L. ( 1938 ) reveals that regular welfare departments were started in the Textile Mills in 1934. A Majority of the mill officials, who were deputed to carry out welfare work in addition to their duties, looks upon in as a means of placating labor. They attempted to keep worker out of labor organization. This revealed the need for an independent labor department under qualified labor officers. The recreation facilities were not only meager but had not reached down the workers levels. The study by Chitnis R. Y. 1950) reveals that 242 workers of a loyalty were interviewed and only 3% of them attended lectures arranged at their factories to explain the E. S. L Scheme. Over ? the felt that the benefits derived were not worth the contributions made for 2 out of 3 said it was regard to calculation of the rate of payme nt. The scheme was not extended to members of the family. Padaliya G. L. (1952) has the observation by his study as the implementation of the non-statutory services and programs involved and approximate per capita expenditure of Rs. 1. 75. As regards Industrial Programs, Nursery School, Adult education Classes, Reading room and Library, Games sewing classes, Creches and club activities were available According to the study conducted by Aggarwal S. K. 1955) the mill provided a variety of welfare amenities like recreation, education, housing, health, canteen, social security. The welfare programs dated back to the year 1921 and did not come about as a result of the passing of the factories act of 1948. The management was deeply concerned about the welfare of the workers and spends a good deal of money in providing these facilities with a view to project their socio-economic and culture development. D. Slesinger and M. Stephenson RESEARCH DESIGN: A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedure. Regarding this project, descriptive research design concern with describing the perception ofà each individuals or narrating facts on welfare measures and diagnostic design helps in determine the frequency with which something occurs or its associated with something else. These two research design help in understand the characteristic in a given situation. Think systematically about aspects in given situation, offers idea for probe and research help to make certain simple decision. DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH: In this research it deals with descriptive research type. Ità includes surveys and fact-finding enquiries of different kinds. The major purpose of descriptive research is description of the state of affairs as it exists at present. 1. 1. 5. 2à SAMPLEà DESIGN: A sample design is a definite plan determined before any data are actually collected for obtaining a sample from a given population. Sampling is used to collect data from limited numbers whereas census is used for large numbers. For the research, sampling method was used. There are different types of sample design based on two factor namely the representationà basis and the element selection technique . There are two main categories under which various sampling method can be put. There are 1. Probability sampling 2. Non probability sampling In this particular research the A studies is on probability sampling. And in the simple random sample is used. PROBABILITY SAMPLING: Probability sampling is based on the concept of random selection; the sample may be either unrestricted or restricted. When each sample elements is drawn individually from theà population at large, then the sample so drawn is known as à µunrestricted sample, where as all other forms of sampling are covered underà the term à µrestricted sample. The most frequently used probability samples are: * Simple random sample * Systematic sample * Stratified sample (proportionate amp;à disproportionate) * Cluster sample NON- PROBABILITY SAMPLING: Non-probability sampling is that sampling procedure which does not afford any basis forà estimating the probability that each item in theà population has of beingà included in the sample. * Judgment sampling * Convenient sampling * Quota sampling. * Snowball sampling SAMPLING METHOD: In this research systematic sampling method is used to collect the primary data by using questionnaire. SYSTEMATIC SAMPLING: A Systematic sample is selected at random sampling. When a complete list of the population is available, this method is used. If a sample of 10 students is to be selected from 100 students, under this method kithà item is picked up from the sample frame and kà is the sample interval. POPULATION SIZE: The overall population size is 250. SAMPLE SIZE: The total sample size of 100 Has been taken for this study. Both male and female employees have been interviewed. 1. 1. 5. 3 DATA COLLECTION METHOD: Primary Source of Data: Primary data is known as the data collected for the first time through field survey. Such data are collected with specific set of objectives to assess the current status of any variable studied. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT: In this project, the data wereà collected through structured questionnaire. QUESTIONNAIRE: A questionnaire is a schedule consisting of a number of coherent and formulated series of question related to the various aspects of the under study. In this method a pre à ± printed list of question arranged in sequenceà is used to elicit response from the important. Types of questions: The following are the types of questions, which are usedà in research. They are: a) Open ended question b) Close ended question c) 5 point likerââ¬â¢s scale a) Open ended questionnaire: An open-ended question gives the respondents complete freedom to decide the form length and detail of theà form. b) Close ended questionnaire: The close-ended question is of two types they are as follows: * Dichotomous question this type has only twoà answers in the form of ? YES? orà ? NO? , TRUE? orà FALSE? etc * Multiple à ± choice questions. In this case the respondents are offered two or more choices and the respondent have to indicate whichà is applicable in the following cases. * 5 point scale will be used to analyze the questions like ââ¬Å"Highly Satisfied, Satisfied, Neutral, Dissatisfied, Highly Dissatisfiedâ⬠1. 1. 5. 4 STATISTICAL TOOLS APPLIED: * Percentage Analysis * Chi-Square method * Correlation. PERCENTAGE ANALYSIS: Percentage refers to a special kind of ratio. Percentage analysis test is done to find out theà percentage of the response of the respondents. In these tool various percentage are presented by the way of Bar-diagram, Pie charts in order to have better understanding of the analysis. It is expressed as, Percentage (%) = ((No of respondents * 100) / total no of respondents) CHI ââ¬â SQUARE METHOD: A chi-square test is a statistical test commonly used for testing independence and goodness of fit. Testing independence determines whether two or more observations across two populations are dependent on each other (that is, whether one variable helps to estimate the other). Testing for goodness of fit determines if an observed frequency distribution matches a theoretical frequency distribution. In both cases the equation to calculate the chi-square statistic iswhere O equals the observed frequency and E the expected frequency. The results of a chi-square test, along with the degrees of freedom, are used with a previously calculated table of chi-square distributions to find aà p-value. The p-value can then be used to determine the significance of the test. CORRELATION: In statistics, the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r) is a common measure of the correlation between two variables X and Y. When measured in a population the Pearson Product Moment correlation is designated by the Greek letter rho (? ). When computed in a sample, it is designated by the letter r and is sometimes called Pearsons r. Pearsons correlation reflects the degree of linear relationship between two variables. It ranges from +1 to -1. A correlation of +1 means that there is a perfect positive linear relationship between variables. A correlation of -1 means that there is a perfect negative linear relationship between variables. A correlation of 0 means there is no linear relationship between the two variables. Correlations are rarely if ever 0, 1, or -1. If you get a certain outcome it could indicate whether correlations were negative or positive. Mathematical Formula: : The quantity r, called the linear correlation coefficient, measures the strength and the direction of a linear relationship between two variables. The linear correlation coefficient is sometimes referred to as the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient in honor of its developer Karl Pearson. The mathematical formula for computing r is: LIMITATIONS OF STUDY The respondents are unable to fill the questionnaire on specific time due to their busy schedule * Many employees gave diplomatic (open/sensitive) answers to some of the questions. * Some employees hesitated to give the actual situation; they feared that management would take any acti on against them * Sometimes the wrong opinion expressed by the respondents can adversely affect the genuine results/project.
